The Federal Government has reiterated its unwavering support for the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) through capitalisation, regulatory alignment, and strategic collaboration, while calling on other member countries to uphold their commitments to strengthen the institution.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, made this known on Friday at the ongoing 32nd Afreximbank Annual Meetings (AAM2025) in Abuja.

Edun affirmed that Nigeria had fully met its treaty obligations and encouraged other states to follow suit to reinforce Afreximbank as a stable, impactful, and resilient pan-African financial institution.

“Our generation must be remembered as builders of a united, prosperous Africa,” Edun said.

“The time is now. Let us be a bridge to the future, fostering shared prosperity, deeper cooperation, and lasting peace. Together, let us drive growth and create jobs, especially through private sector investment.”

The minister revealed that Afreximbank’s development financing to Nigeria had surpassed 50 billion dollars, describing the bank as pivotal in the country’s economic transformation.

He referenced landmark interventions such as the opening of the African Trade Centre and the establishment of the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja as tangible illustrations of the bank’s value to Nigeria and the broader region.

Edun commended the bank’s continued support for Nigeria’s private sector and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), stressing that these interventions had far-reaching socio-economic impacts.

He also paid tribute to Prof Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, lauding his visionary leadership and enduring contribution to African economic integration and prosperity.

According to Edun, Oramah’s tenure has been defined by transformative initiatives including the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Adjustment Facility, the Transit Guarantee Scheme, and the Annual International Trade Fair.

“These are foundational instruments for enabling intra-African trade,” Edun stated. “This is his final Annual General Meeting as President of Afreximbank, and we celebrate his remarkable achievements.”

The minister noted that Nigeria was proud to host the landmark event, welcoming heads of state, prime ministers, and business leaders from across Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.

“We are at a pivotal juncture in Africa’s history. The AfCFTA presents a powerful opportunity to redefine our future,” Edun said.

“This gathering is more than just a conference. It is a convergence of our shared vision for a more prosperous, more integrated, and more globally competitive Africa.”

The 2025 Afreximbank Annual Meetings carry the theme, “Building the Future in Decades of Resilience.”
