NEMA, fire service respond to fire outbreak at Jos Faringada Market

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Jos Operations Office, on March 2, 2026, joined the Federal Fire Service in responding to a fire outbreak at Faringada Market in Jos North LGA of Plateau State.

The incident, which occurred at about 6:00 a.m., affected several vehicle spare parts shops, destroying 20 shops, four containers and two vehicles, including a bus and a Toyota Corolla. No casualty was recorded.

Emergency responders worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining shops within the market. The coordinated efforts of NEMA and the Federal Fire Service brought the fire under control and limited further damage.

Preliminary information from market stakeholders indicated that the cause of the fire has not been determined. Investigations are ongoing.

The incident resulted in losses for affected traders, many of whom depend on their businesses for livelihood.
Speaking at the scene, Mallam Shehu Ibrahim, former President of the Market Association, commended NEMA and the Federal Fire Service for their response, noting that timely intervention prevented further destruction.

NEMA reiterated the need for fire safety awareness in markets and commercial centres, urging traders to observe safety measures, including proper electrical installations and safe handling of flammable materials.
