The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun emergency repair works on the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road.
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC Managing Director, made this announcement during an inspection of the ongoing repairs at the failed sections of the road between Umuapu and Umuagwo in Imo State.
Ogbuku explained that the road’s deteriorating condition required immediate intervention, prompting the NDDC to take swift action to restore its motorability.
Accompanied by NDDC officials, the NDDC CEO was briefed on-site by engineers from the construction firm handling the emergency rehabilitation.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for issuing the directive to urgently address the restoration of critical roads in the Niger Delta region.
Ogbuku said: “Following a presidential directive to intervene urgently in restoring the dilapidated sections of regional roads, the NDDC has quickly mobilised construction companies to carry out remedial works, ensuring that the people do not suffer unnecessary hardships while travelling.”
The NDDC Managing Director also commended the Federal Government for its swift response to the public outcry over the poor condition of roads in the Niger Delta.
He expressed confidence that the restoration work on the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road would be durable when completed.
“As an interventionist agency, we will continue to complement the efforts of both the Federal and State Governments by taking measures to ease the stress commuters face daily,” Ogbuku added.
He expressed satisfaction with the quality of the ongoing work and praised the contractor for their commitment to completing the project.
Ogbuku also urged local communities and commuters to be patient during the construction process, assuring them that the NDDC was determined to complete the project as quickly as possible.
Mr. Kinsley Okorigwe, a commercial bus driver using the road, thanked the NDDC for responding promptly to the distress calls of commuters enduring the hardships caused by the damaged road.
