The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sustained its investigation, surveillance and enforcement activities from January to August 2026 as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that regulated products available in Nigeria meet the required standards of quality, safety and efficacy.
Data compiled by the Agency’s Directorate of Investigation and Enforcement for the eight-month period show that 474 new cases were reported, 295 cases were concluded, and 213 raids were conducted across relevant categories of regulated products.
The report also recorded 821 product seizure entries, 179 establishments closed or sealed, 52 arrests, 157 surveillance activities and 218 administrative sanctions. In addition, the Agency conducted 22 reported product destruction exercises during the period.
The enforcement activities covered food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, drinks and chemicals, reflecting the broad scope of NAFDAC’s mandate to protect consumers from substandard, falsified, unsafe and otherwise non-compliant regulated products.
The sustained enforcement activities recorded during the period reflects NAFDAC’s continuing institutional commitment under the leadership of its Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye to strengthening regulatory oversight, improving compliance and safeguarding the health of Nigerians.
Cosmetics, drinks and chemicals among key enforcement areas
A breakdown of reported product seizure entries revelas that cosmetics accounted for the highest number of recorded product seizure entries, with 401 entries, followed by drinks with 215 and drugs with 112. These figures reflect the distribution of reported enforcement activities across product categories and do not, by themselves, represent the physical quantity or monetary value of products seized.
Cosmetics also accounted for 64 of the 179 recorded establishment closures or sealing actions, while drinks accounted for 67 of the 213 raids conducted during the period.
The Agency’s activities further included the placement of products on hold, the collection and submission of product samples for laboratory analysis, interrogations and the referral of cases for legal action where applicable.
These measures form part of NAFDAC’s regulatory approach to identifying suspected violations, gathering evidence, preventing the continued distribution of potentially harmful products and taking appropriate action in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Sustained action against regulatory violations
The conclusion of 295 cases during the reporting period demonstrates the continued work of the Directorate of Investigation and Enforcement in processing reported cases and pursuing regulatory action.
NAFDAC recognises that effective enforcement requires more than raids and seizures. It also involves surveillance, investigation, evidence gathering, laboratory analysis where necessary, due process and the application of appropriate administrative or judicial sanctions.
The Agency will continue to strengthen collaboration with relevant government institutions, law enforcement agencies, state task forces and other stakeholders to improve intelligence gathering, enhance compliance and address the circulation of unregistered, falsified, substandard and unsafe regulated products.
Consumer vigilance remains essential
NAFDAC urges manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and other operators within the regulated sectors to comply strictly with applicable regulatory requirements. Businesses are reminded to ensure that their products are duly registered where required, sourced through legitimate channels, appropriately labelled and stored under the prescribed conditions.
Members of the public are also encouraged to purchase regulated products from reputable outlets, verify product registration status through official NAFDAC channels where applicable, and report suspected falsified, substandard or unsafe products to the Agency.
Consumers should not hesitate to report suspicious products or adverse reactions through NAFDAC’s established reporting channels. Timely reporting can support regulatory investigations and help prevent further harm.
NAFDAC assures Nigerians that the protection of public health remains central to its mandate. The Agency will continue to strengthen regulatory oversight, investigate suspected violations, take appropriate enforcement action and work with stakeholders to promote access to regulated products that meet the required standards of quality, safety and efficacy.
