A woman, Mrs Ajibola Bolakale, has petitioned the Lagos State Police Command over alleged threats to her life and those of her three daughters by members of her husband’s family.
Bolakale, who resides at 14 Royalty Road, House 3D, Ikota Villa, Lagos, alleged that the family had insisted on carrying out a barbaric tradition on her first daughter, Ajibola Oreoluwa, who recently turned 12 years old.
According to her complaint, a member of the family, Mr Ajibola Lere, visited their home on January 31, 2024, and informed her that it was mandatory for her daughter to be deflowered in line with the family’s tradition. Lere allegedly threatened that failure to comply would lead to Bolakale’s death “by traditional means.”
The report stated that the confrontation triggered a serious disagreement between the Ajibola and Oladele families, with Bolakale’s husband, Mr Ajibola Tunde, reportedly supporting the tradition.
Bolakale further alleged that on February 23, 2024, Lere forcefully entered their Lagos residence in their absence and left a note warning that if Oreoluwa was not brought to the village within seven days for the ritual, she would face dire consequences. He allegedly took away vital documents, including their children’s birth certificates and school records.
Fearing for their safety, Bolakale said she relocated her three daughters to her mother’s house in Aiyetoro, Ekiti State. She also claimed that following their relocation, she received several threatening messages and calls from her husband and his family.
Tragically, Bolakale reported that her mother, Mrs Oladele Olukemi, a hypertensive patient, died from complications allegedly triggered by the stress of the threats. She added that she had suffered repeated domestic violence from her husband over her refusal to submit their daughter to the alleged tradition.
The police confirmed receipt of her complaint and said investigations had commenced into the alleged threats.
