MCO, EFCC deepen partnership to bolster mining sector oversight

The Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have intensified their collaboration to strengthen regulation and reposition Nigeria’s mining industry.

The Director-General of the MCO, Obadiah Nkom, made this known in a statement issued by the organisation’s Head of Press, Patrick Osuji, on Thursday in Abuja.

Nkom underscored the crucial role of strategic partnerships in addressing economic and financial crimes within the mining sector. He explained that the initiative seeks to create a secure and compliant operating environment for stakeholders across the industry.

He stated that the collaboration aligns with the MCO’s ongoing reforms aimed at improving its services and operational efficiency. These reforms, he said, have already delivered significant progress in the digitisation of mineral title administration and in boosting government revenue from mining activities.

“By working closely with the EFCC, the MCO aims to advance transparency and accountability within the sector,” he said.

According to him, the partnership will leverage the strengths of both agencies to promote good governance, adding that discussions are underway to expand cooperation into intelligence sharing, enforcement strategies, and capacity development initiatives.

Nkom reaffirmed the MCO’s commitment to building alliances with relevant organisations as part of its broader mission to modernise and stabilise Nigeria’s mining sector.
