The Minister of State for Defence and former Zamfara governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has publicly reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu amid rising calls for his removal from office.
Describing recent criticisms as “coordinated, malicious and politically motivated,” Matawalle insisted the attacks targeted him for resisting efforts to undermine the President’s security agenda.
“Public service, especially in a country facing serious security challenges, requires courage, consistency and a commitment to truth,” he said.
Through his former Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Dosara, Matawalle outlined his record as Zamfara governor in combating terrorism and banditry.
He stressed that politically motivated smear campaigns would neither intimidate him nor distract him from defending the nation.
“The allegations are baseless. The agenda is political. The truth is clear,” he said.
Matawalle noted that banditry existed before his administration but highlighted the measures he implemented, including high-level security committees, improved intelligence networks, and local vigilance units.
He also temporarily suspended telecommunications to support military operations against bandits.
He cited other achievements, such as removing compromised traditional rulers, retrieving illegal arms, requesting additional federal troops, rescuing kidnapped victims, and deporting foreign nationals involved in illicit mining activities.
Also, Matawalle emphasised his humanitarian efforts, including providing relief materials, medical care, and support for displaced persons affected by banditry.
He claimed these initiatives contributed to over a year without attacks or kidnappings in Zamfara, a milestone recognised nationally and internationally.
Highlighting his role in the recent rescue of abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi State, Matawalle said some political actors attempted to exploit the operation for personal gain and to embarrass the federal government.
“My loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains total. No propaganda or political blackmail will deter me from my duty to Nigeria’s security,” he said, praising security personnel for their professionalism during operations.
He added that critics were afraid of ongoing reforms in national security, warning that attempts to undermine these efforts were politically motivated.
“No intimidation, smear campaign, or political sabotage will stop me. Justice will prevail,” Matawalle added.
