In a renewed appeal for vigilance, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has called on officers and personnel of the agency to remain resolute and committed in the ongoing fight against illicit drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
Marwa made the appeal during the commissioning of newly completed residential blocks and a rehabilitation facility for NDLEA staff in Kano. Speaking at the event, he underscored the pivotal role officers play in curbing drug-related crimes in Nigeria.
“Your commitment and bravery in confronting the menace of drug abuse and trafficking are essential to securing our communities. The success of our operations does not rely solely on our equipment and training, but also on the well-being of our personnel,” Marwa said.
He noted that the provision of secure and decent accommodation was part of the agency’s broader strategy to empower its workforce and reinforce morale. The newly commissioned facilities, located in Kano, will serve personnel attached to the Zonal Command, Kano Command, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Command, and the Strike Force Team deployed in the state.
Marwa also stated that the development aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the welfare of security operatives nationwide.
“These facilities are not just buildings, they are a reflection of our determination to build a strong, professional, and motivated agency,” he added.
In addition to the housing units, the NDLEA also unveiled a new rehabilitation centre aimed at supporting the agency’s drug demand reduction efforts. The centre is designed to offer treatment and recovery services to individuals affected by substance abuse, reinforcing the agency’s dual focus on enforcement and rehabilitation.
The NDLEA chief commended the officers stationed in Kano for their outstanding performance. He noted that Kano’s strategic location—with its international airport and proximity to borders—makes it a critical point in the country’s counter-narcotics efforts.
He referenced the notable progress the agency has made over the past year, including numerous arrests, large-scale drug seizures, and successful prosecutions, but urged officers not to become complacent.
“Our achievements are commendable, but they are just the beginning. We must push harder, work smarter, and aim higher,” he said.
Marwa also stressed the importance of maintaining the new facilities, stating that proper care of the environment reflects the discipline and professionalism expected of NDLEA personnel.
As part of the event, Marwa formally decorated Maryam Gambo Sani, the Zonal Commander of Zone 3, with the rank of Deputy
