Man arrested for stoning commercial driver to death in Cross River

Police in Cross River State have arrested a 35-year-old man, Adeshina Gilbert, over the brutal killing of a commercial driver in Obudu Local Government Area.
The suspect, a resident of Abonkib community in Obudu Urban, was apprehended following a directive from the state Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegba, who ordered a manhunt for all individuals involved in the incident.
Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo, revealed that the victim, identified as Agage Ternenge, was attacked and stoned to death on Friday, July 18, 2025, while delivering a waybill in Obudu.
“The victim, a native of Mbanyam in Mbatyough Council Ward of Vandeikya LGA, Benue State, was killed in connection with a disputed land issue between communities in Vandeikya and Obudu,” the police statement said.
A disturbing video of the attack, now circulating on social media, shows a group of hoodlums carrying out the deadly assault in broad daylight.
Describing the killing as “barbaric” and a “gross violation of fundamental human rights,” CP Afegba vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice. He also assured that efforts are underway to track down other suspects who remain at large.
“The police will stop at nothing to ensure every individual involved in this heinous crime is brought to book,” Afegba stated.
