Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing growing insecurity, economic hardship, and a decline in governance standards.
Malami announced his defection in a public statement titled “To the Good People of Kebbi and Fellow Nigerians”, shared on Wednesday through his official social media platform.
He said the decision came after “wide consultations and deep personal reflection,” clarifying that it was not borne out of personal ambition or political grievance, but a commitment to national renewal and public welfare.
“Nigeria is bleeding,” he wrote. “Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives, while the government prioritises politics over the safety of its citizens.”
Malami also pointed to the deteriorating economic climate, expressing concern over soaring prices and rising unemployment.
“The cost of basic food items has tripled. The poor can no longer feed their families. Jobs are disappearing. Young people are increasingly hopeless,” he said.
He criticised the current administration for what he described as a shift away from competence and national interest.
“Governance has been abandoned. Appointments, projects, and policies are now guided by political loyalty, not merit or national interest,” he stated. “I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die.”
Explaining his choice of party, Malami said the African Democratic Congress stands for “justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal,” adding that he believes the ADC has the vision and platform to deliver real change.
“With the support of Nigerians, we can create a better future for our beloved nation,” he affirmed.
The former minister also reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Kebbi State, assuring them that his political move was made to strengthen advocacy on their behalf and ensure their concerns are more effectively addressed.
Malami’s defection comes in the wake of the recent departure of three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators, led by Adamu Aliero, who moved to the APC. His switch to the ADC now positions him as one of the most prominent opposition figures in Kebbi State.
