LAWMA urges residents to adopt responsible waste disposal
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices to achieve a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city.
This is contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director, Public Affairs Unit of the agency, Mr Mukaila Sanusi.
According to the statement, the Managing Director, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made the appeal on Saturday while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.
He discussed the challenges of waste management in a fast-growing city like Lagos and emphasised the need for shared responsibility.
Gbadegesin said LAWMA had continued its waste evacuation and management operations across the state, strengthening routine collection services and clearing waste flashpoints caused by indiscriminate dumping and poor waste handling.
The LAWMA boss encouraged residents to practise basic waste sorting at source.
He explained that separating recyclable materials from general waste would improve collection efficiency, support recycling efforts, and reduce pressure on landfill sites.
He said the authority was increasing its focus on recycling, stressing that waste should be viewed as a resource with economic value rather than just refuse.
According to him, recycling initiatives would create jobs, encourage private sector participation, and help protect the environment.
He also advocated a circular economy approach, in which materials are recovered, reused, and recycled, rather than relying solely on collection and disposal.
Gbadegesin stressed LAWMA’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws, noting that about 400 cases of environmental offences were prosecuted in 2025.
He cited a recent case in which a man arrested for indiscriminate dumping was sentenced to jail.
He called on residents to support enforcement efforts by avoiding illegal dumping and reporting offenders, adding that public cooperation is key to keeping Lagos clean.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to working with stakeholders to improve waste management systems and promote a cleaner, more liveable Lagos State.
