LAWMA clears waste heap along Orile–Mile 2, Doyin corridors amid sanitation drive

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has carried out an overnight waste evacuation exercise along the Orile–Mile 2 and Doyin corridors, removing heaps of accumulated refuse in a move aimed at improving environmental sanitation and restoring order to two of the state’s busiest transport routes.

The operation, carried out by the agency’s intervention team, targeted waste that had built up along the corridors, where indiscriminate dumping and delays in waste evacuation have at times posed environmental and public health concerns, while also affecting the movement of motorists and pedestrians.

The exercise comes as Lagos State continues to intensify efforts to address waste management challenges in strategic locations, particularly major roads and commercial corridors that generate large volumes of waste daily due to heavy human and vehicular activities.

In a statement, LAWMA said the overnight evacuation formed part of its ongoing sanitation interventions across the state to ensure cleaner surroundings and improve the overall environmental condition of Lagos.

The authority noted that routine evacuation operations have become necessary in several areas to prevent refuse from obstructing drainage channels, creating traffic bottlenecks or constituting health risks, especially during the rainy season when blocked drains can contribute to flooding.

The agency urged residents, traders and businesses to dispose of waste through approved channels and avoid dumping refuse on road medians, highways and other public spaces, stressing that effective waste management requires the cooperation of both government and the public.

Lagos State has in recent months stepped up enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations and increased waste evacuation operations as part of broader efforts to improve cleanliness and public health across the metropolis.
