The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has issued a public advisory urging all waterway users to exercise heightened caution as the rainy season sets in.

The agency emphasized that the season typically brings increased water levels, unstable currents, and poor visibility, all of which pose significant risks to water transport operations.

In a statement released on Monday, LASWA highlighted the potential dangers associated with navigating Lagos waterways during the rainy months and outlined key safety measures for both commuters and boat operators.

"All waterway users are hereby advised to take extra precautions during the rainy season," the statement read. "This period comes with increased water volume, unstable currents, and foggy weather conditions that complicate navigation and increase the likelihood of accidents."

The authority urged commuters to strictly adhere to safety protocols and follow instructions from LASWA Marine Guards.

Boat operators were also reminded to reduce their speed, avoid overloading, and suspend operations during adverse weather conditions.

Traveling at night or in low-visibility conditions should be avoided entirely, the agency warned, noting that weather should always be checked prior to any trip.

LASWA further encouraged passengers to report any unsafe practices or violations to officials or through official channels.

The statement concluded with a firm reminder that the safety of lives remains LASWA’s top priority.
