LASWA set to launch 'Omi Eko' project, unveil 78 electric ferries

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), is scheduled to officially launch the transformative Omi Eko Project today at the Five Cowries Terminal in Falomo.

This launch marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to sustainable development, modern water transportation, and smart city innovation under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to a statement released by LASWA, the high-profile event is expected to attract top government officials, development partners, community leaders, key stakeholders, and members of the press.

The ceremony will feature compelling keynote speeches, a virtual presentation providing an overview of the 'Omi Eko' Project, and the formal inauguration by Governor Sanwo-Olu.

The Omi Eko Project is specifically designed to revolutionize Lagos’s water transport system by integrating cutting-edge technology, upgrading terminal infrastructure, and championing environmental sustainability. A major highlight of the initiative is the planned deployment of 78 high-capacity electric ferries.

Complementing the new fleet will be the introduction of digital ticketing platforms, intelligent terminals, and enhanced safety innovations. These measures are all aimed at significantly reducing travel time and offering millions of commuters a reliable, eco-friendly transport alternative.

LASWA noted that the choice of the Five Cowries Terminal as the launch venue underscores its critical role as a strategic hub for intermodal transport in Lagos, symbolising the seamless connection between land and water mobility as envisioned in the Lagos Urban Mobility Plan.

The Omi Eko Project, which translates to Lagos Water signals a new era of efficient, sustainable, and modern transportation in Africa’s most populous city.
