LASEPA launches digital greenhouse gas registry

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has launched a digital Greenhouse Gas Registry to measure, report and verify greenhouse gas emissions across different sectors of the state’s economy.

Speaking at the launch, the General Manager of LASEPA, Babatunde Ajayi, said the registry would enable Lagos State to accurately measure, report and verify greenhouse gas emissions while demonstrating the state’s leadership in climate action.

“The essence of having a greenhouse gas registry is to properly show Lagos first that we can measure, report and verify. We also need to show the world that we’re taking the lead in these measurements,” Ajayi said.

He said the initiative would create opportunities for climate financing, enabling greater support for environmental projects such as tree planting and climate-conscious infrastructure.

According to him, the registry will also lay the foundation for Africa’s first carbon trading platform and improve access to verified emissions data required for international climate funding.

Ajayi noted that air pollution remains a major public health concern, adding that about 30,000 people die prematurely each year as a result of exposure to particulate matter pollution.

He said the registry would help bridge data gaps on greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants, providing reliable information to support evidence-based policymaking, climate negotiations and environmental planning.

LASEPA said the initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening environmental governance, improving climate resilience and promoting sustainable economic growth in Lagos State.
