The Lagos State Government has disclosed that 517,394 traffic infractions were recorded across the state between May 2024 and March 2025.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said this at the 2025 Ministerial Press briefing in commemoration of the second year of the second term in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to him, “470,523 of these violations were captured by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, while 46,871 were recorded by hand-held Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices.

“In ensuring only roadworthy vehicles ply Lagos roads for sanity, standard, safety and security of lives and property, the Vehicle Inspection Services (VIS) has continued to enforce ‘No Vehicle Inspection, No Road worthiness Certificate’ policy to clamp down on rickety vehicles and improve safety of road users across the metropolis.”

The government has intensified its enforcement of the Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, utilizing the Intelligent Transport System and Plate detection to monitor speed limit violations.

During the period under review, a total of 1,014,251 roadworthiness certificates were issued, alongside 1,014,251 Proof of Ownership (POC) certificates, with Osiyemi stating that “Yearly POC commenced in 2023 for the National data bank on Security and Safety.”

The government has also introduced oral, computer-based tests, and practical tests for driver’s license applicants, and 1,432 international driver’s permits were issued.
He also emphasized that the initiative aligns with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the Sanwo-Olu administration, particularly its focus on inclusion.

Osiyemi stated that the The Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) serves as the manufacturing arm of the state government, responsible for producing vehicle number plates for Lagos State.

“Over the past two decades, the authority has expanded its role to include the production of aluminum-based road furniture, aligning with the state’s infrastructure and aesthetics development goals.”

He also mentioned that the authority produces customized plates, including 716 fancy motor vehicle plates and 347 motorcycle fancy plates, available to vehicle owners upon request.
