A devastating building collapse in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State has claimed four lives, with rescue operations still ongoing to locate trapped survivors.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at Oriwu Street, with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) promptly responding to distress calls.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin on Thursday, “Two more dead bodies [were] brought out of the rubble this morning.”

This update confirms that the death toll has increased to four, with six people rescued and two bodies recovered initially.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority reported that the injured persons received immediate medical care, with six seriously injured adult males rescued and administered medical attention before being transported to Marina General Hospital for further treatment.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, stated that the agency’s Response Team from its Lekki and Cappa bases was activated following distress calls.

Upon arrival, LASEMA’s Shark and Eagle Response Teams discovered a 3-storey building under construction had collapsed.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that the cause of the collapse was yet to be ascertained, with further investigations to be conducted.
