The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has reiterated its ban on night-time travel on inland waterways, cautioning residents and boat operators ahead of a concert by Fuji musician Alhaji Sule Alao Malaika at Ilashe Beach on Sunday.
In a statement, LASWA General Manager, Damilola Emmanuel, urged concert-goers to plan their travel carefully and adhere strictly to safety regulations. She emphasized that the restriction applies to all watercraft, both commercial and private, and that daylight navigation remains the safest option.
“Night voyages are prohibited due to serious risks, including poor visibility and navigational hazards. These measures are intended to protect lives and property on Lagos waterways,” Emmanuel said.
The authority also advised visitors to arrive early to avoid rushing and discouraged unsafe night travel. Boat operators were instructed to strictly follow authorised operating hours, enforce life jacket use, and comply with all safety protocols.
To ensure compliance, LASWA is working with the National Inland Waterways Authority and other security agencies to intensify patrols. Emmanuel warned that offenders would face legal consequences, underscoring the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for violations.
“Safety on our waterways is everyone’s responsibility,” she added.
