The Labour Party has cautioned the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) against implementing its proposed salary increase for political office holders, describing the move as insensitive given the current economic hardship in the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, described the plan as a “misadventure” and urged the commission to retrace its steps in the national interest.

According to him, rather than pushing for higher pay for politicians, the commission should prioritise raising the minimum wage of Nigerian workers above the current ₦70,000. He noted that even the United States government had recently called for improvements in Nigeria’s wage structure, stressing that such an appeal from a foreign nation underscored the urgency of addressing workers’ welfare.

“The commission’s chairman and members have no valid excuse not to do more for suffering citizens,” Akeni said, urging RMAFC to align its policies with the realities faced by Nigerians.
