Kwara Sports Commission dissolves all associations

The Kwara State Sports Commission has dissolved all sports associations in the state with immediate effect.
This was contained in a statement issued in Ilorin on Thursday by the Commission’s Press Secretary, Saheed Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the decision followed a resolution reached at the Commission’s meeting on September 12, 2025, where members extensively reviewed the activities of the associations before approving their dissolution.
The Commission explained that the move was aimed at injecting “new, committed, and passionate members” into the associations, while also retaining some active former members to improve service delivery.
It directed affected officials to hand over all documents, records, and materials belonging to the associations to their respective secretaries without delay.
“While appreciating the contributions of the outgoing members, the Commission urges them to continue supporting the development of sports in Kwara State and to respond promptly whenever called upon in the future,” the statement read.
Recall that the Commission’s Chairman, Bola Magaji, had earlier vowed to sanction officials responsible for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s suspension of the Kwara State Athletics Association.
The AFN had banned the association indefinitely after discovering that a suspended coach, Hammid Muritala, who is serving a 10-year ban for administering banned substances to a youth athlete in Ilorin, was still involved in state athletics activities.
Despite his suspension since October 2022, Muritala was part of Kwara’s contingent at the Golden League in Benin City, Edo State, prompting outrage among stakeholders.
Magaji stressed that officers responsible for the lapse would be held accountable, adding that efforts were ongoing to appeal to the AFN to review its stance.
