The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to controlling and eradicating rabies, particularly from dog and cat bites, through a comprehensive vaccination campaign.
Mr. Oloruntoyosi Thomas-Adebayo, the State Commissioner for Livestock Development, made this known on Thursday while receiving a delegation from the Dog Hunters Association of Kwara. He emphasised that the state would employ an integrated approach that recognises the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health.
The commissioner outlined plans to vaccinate both pets and stray animals to prevent rabies transmission and called for public awareness and behavioural change. He also confirmed the government’s readiness to collaborate with stakeholders to maintain a disease-free environment.
In a related development, the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Abdullateef Olugbon, informed the association about the symptoms of rabies in animals and encouraged pet owners to seek immediate veterinary care if they noticed any signs of infection.
