The vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 elections, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat mishap in the Gorau community of Goronyo Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

In a personal statement issued on Friday following reports that the disaster claimed at least 41 lives, Kwankwaso described the incident as profoundly painful and heartbreaking.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic boat mishap that occurred earlier today in the Gorau community of Goronyo Local Government Area, Sokoto State, which has reportedly claimed the lives of 41 people,” Kwankwaso stated.

“The loss of so many lives in a single incident is profoundly painful and heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy,” he stressed.

Commending the first responders and emergency management teams involved in the search and rescue operations, the former Kano State Governor acknowledged their courageous efforts to rescue survivors and assist affected families.

He further called on maritime and security authorities to investigate the root cause of the accident and implement stricter safety standards along Nigeria’s inland waterways to prevent similar disasters.

“I commend the rescuers and everyone who took part in the emergency response for their courageous efforts to save lives and assist the victims,” Kwankwaso added.

“I also urge the relevant authorities to promptly and thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, and to strengthen safety measures on our waterways to prevent the recurrence of such a devastating tragedy,” he said.
