Kogi Police urge stakeholders to bolster community policing for enhanced security

The Kogi State Police Command has urged traditional rulers and other key stakeholders to reinforce community policing efforts to curb crime and enhance security across the state.

This appeal was made by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Abubakar Zubairu, in a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja by the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Williams Ovye-Aya.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum in Okene Local Government Area, Zubairu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to collaborative security initiatives, stressing that manpower and resource limitations necessitate a more inclusive approach to policing.

He commended Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Miller Dantawaye, for his proactive leadership, remarking that security is a collective responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of all members of society.

In his address, Dantawaye reiterated the command’s commitment to embedding community policing as a core strategy for effective law enforcement.

He underscored the importance of partnerships among security agencies, traditional institutions, local communities, and other stakeholders, particularly in tackling kidnapping and other criminal threats.

Acknowledging the contributions of security formations such as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilante groups, hunters, and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, Dantawaye praised their dedication to ensuring safety within the state.

He encouraged residents to take an active role in intelligence gathering, emphasising that security should not be the sole responsibility of uniformed personnel.

“Policing thrives on public cooperation. We need you to serve as our eyes and ears in the fight against crime, ensuring a safer environment for all,” he stated.

The commissioner further advised officers to uphold discipline, professionalism, and human rights in their duties, adding that ongoing training is being provided to enhance their investigative and operational skills.

“As part of our sustained efforts to combat crime, the police in Kogi will intensify intelligence-driven operations, foster stronger ties with communities, and engage stakeholders to achieve lasting peace and security across the state,” Dantawaye assured.

The stakeholders present at the meeting included traditional rulers, local government officials, transport unions, and representatives of various community groups.

They pledged their full support in strengthening security measures across Kogi State.
