The Kebbi State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.

The declaration was approved by Governor Nasir Idris and announced in a statement issued on Monday in Birnin Kebbi by the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Hajiya Hafsat Tune.

According to the statement, all government offices across the state will remain closed on Tuesday to enable residents, particularly civil servants, to celebrate the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year. Official activities are expected to resume on Wednesday, June 17.

The statement quoted the governor as approving the work-free day to allow Muslim faithful and other residents to observe the occasion and reflect on the significance of the Hijrah, which marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah.

The state government urged residents to use the holiday to pray for peace, unity and progress in Kebbi State and Nigeria.

Governor Idris congratulated Muslims on witnessing the new Islamic year and called on citizens to embrace the values of sacrifice, tolerance, patience and devotion associated with the Islamic faith.

He also encouraged residents to continue supporting government efforts aimed at promoting development and improving the welfare of the people across the state.

The government expressed hope that the new Islamic year would bring greater prosperity and harmony to the state and the nation.

The statement further noted that all government workers are expected to return to work on Wednesday following the one-day public holiday.

The announcement was signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris.
