Kano State’s electricity sector is poised for a significant transformation as the Kano State House of Assembly has introduced a groundbreaking bill aimed at creating a state-run Electricity Regulatory Agency.

The proposed agency is intended to address the state’s long-standing power supply challenges while setting out a comprehensive framework to oversee and manage the local electricity market.

Presenting the bill during the Assembly’s plenary session on Monday, Majority Leader Hon. Lawan Husaini Dala outlined the crucial role the new agency would play in diversifying sources of power generation.

According to Dala, the agency will not only supervise the distribution of electricity but also deploy modern strategies to meet the growing energy needs of Kano’s expanding population. He stressed that one of the primary aims of the agency would be to ensure the electricity sector supports industrial development and attracts substantial investment.

“The establishment of this agency will create a sustainable energy market for Kano, reducing our reliance on the national grid while ensuring that both residential and commercial consumers have access to reliable power,” Dala explained.

Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, the Assembly’s Chief Press Secretary, also expanded on the importance of the bill during an interview with Premier Radio. He maintained that the legislation represents a critical step towards Kano achieving energy self-sufficiency.

“Once the legislative process is completed, Kano State will be on the path to independently generating and managing its own electricity, thus significantly reducing dependence on the national grid,” Shawai said.
