Kaigama urges priests to serve with humility, not envy material rewards

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has charged Catholic priests to remain devoted to their calling, serve with humility, and resist the urge to compare themselves with colleagues assigned to more materially rewarding parishes.

Speaking during the 25th priestly anniversary celebration of Rev. Fr. Christian Anieke, Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, Kaigama emphasized that the essence of priesthood lies in unwavering service to God and humanity, regardless of the location or perceived benefits of one’s posting.

He advised priests not to be envious of others who might receive more offerings or gifts like rams and goats from parishioners, stressing that each priest has a unique mission chosen by God.

“Whether you’re assigned to a prison, school, or a rural mission, don’t envy those who receive more Sunday offerings. Focus on your calling,” he said. “Maybe if the one receiving goats and rams gets enough, he’ll share with you.”

The Archbishop also reflected on the unpredictability of divine selection, recalling how Pope Leo XIV emerged unexpectedly despite widespread speculation about other candidates, underscoring that God's choices are not always predictable.

He further reminded priests of the sacred and permanent nature of their calling, urging them to stay prayerful and rooted in service. “Even the world’s most powerful president doesn’t possess the spiritual authority of a priest,” Kaigama stated.

Kaigama commended Fr. Anieke for his transformative leadership at GOUNI, praising his ability to attract development through creativity and strategic partnerships. He also thanked Bishop Callistus Onaga for entrusting Anieke with the university's leadership.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, who was present at the celebration, hailed the Catholic Church’s role in shaping his values. He described Fr. Anieke as a selfless educator and an exemplary leader committed to human capital development. Mbah reiterated his administration’s dedication to education as a tool for eradicating poverty and building a prosperous future.

Fr. Anieke, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the clergy, traditional rulers, friends, and government officials who graced the event. He also acknowledged the support of Bishop Emeritus Anthony Gbuji, who ordained him, and appreciated Governor Mbah’s continuous support.

The ceremony drew over 100 priests, several bishops, and other dignitaries in celebration of Anieke’s 25 years of impactful priesthood.
