The Senate on Wednesday confirmed General Olufemi Oluyede as Nigeria’s new Chief of Defence Staff, following his screening alongside other newly appointed service chiefs at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

General Oluyede’s confirmation came barely an hour after he and his team arrived under tight security for the session, which marked the beginning of the Senate’s constitutional review process for top military appointments.

Welcoming the nominees, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, said the exercise was a key oversight duty of the legislature aimed at ensuring that only the most competent and patriotic officers are entrusted with national defence responsibilities.

“Distinguished colleagues, it is with great pleasure that I welcome our newly appointed Service Chiefs to the hallowed chamber. Today’s exercise is in keeping with our constitutional duty to provide oversight and ensure that only the most disciplined officers safeguard our national security and territorial integrity,” Akpabio declared.
