Insecurity: FG to muster political will, tackle internal sabotage-Don
A political scientist, Prof. Sylvester Akhaine, has tasked the Federal Government with confronting internal sabotage in the nation’s security system to guarantee democratic stability and economic growth.
Akhaine, a lecturer at the Lagos State University (LASU), stated this in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Lagos.
He said protecting lives and property was the foremost duty of any government, adding that development could not thrive amid fear and insecurity.
According to him, a secure nation enables citizens to pursue economic and social activities freely, thereby strengthening the economy and democracy.
“Security of lives and property is the primary obligation of the state. Where it fails, government must act decisively to restore it,” he said.
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akhaine said the government must go beyond cosmetic reforms such as troops expansion and changes of service chiefs.
He identified sabotage from within the security establishment as the greatest threat to the country’s fight against insecurity.
“The real problem is that the security sector is undermining itself. Some people within it are disloyal and frustrate genuine efforts,” he said.
The don maintained that insurgents were no match for the Nigerian state, insisting that only political will could end the crisis.
“The insurgents are not stronger than Nigeria. What is missing is the resolve to confront them,” he said.
He urged the government to expose and isolate saboteurs and reorganise the security forces for greater accountability and commitment.
Akhaine also called for a total overhaul of the security agencies, warning that alleged links between some personnel and criminals must not be overlooked.
According to him, tackling internal sabotage remains the surest way to improve security and rebuild public confidence in the agencies.
He expressed optimism that decisive leadership and sustained reforms would help Nigeria overcome its security challenges.
