The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has implemented all administrative recommendations directed at the commission by the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) following the 2023 general elections.
Speaking during a post-election follow-up meeting with the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu revealed that 13 out of 37 recommendations were addressed specifically to the commission. The remaining suggestions were directed at other key institutions including the National Assembly, the Nigeria Police Force, political parties, and several regulatory and civil society bodies.
Yakubu explained that all recommendations requiring administrative action had been acted upon, while INEC is awaiting the outcome of legislative reviews for reforms that need National Assembly intervention. He also noted that the commission’s responses and reform proposals—based on wide consultations—are publicly available online.
He praised ECOWAS and ECONEC for their sustained efforts in strengthening electoral processes across West Africa through follow-up missions and peer learning among electoral bodies.
The visiting ECONEC team, led by the Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, commended INEC’s efforts in adopting recommendations and sharing resources with peer institutions. She noted that the mission’s visit was aimed at learning from Nigeria’s experience and applying those lessons to improve electoral management in other West African nations.
Also present were representatives from Ghana’s Electoral Commission and international partners such as the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA), International IDEA, and the German Development Agency.
