A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Ibrahim Kalgo, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to obstruct the registration of a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on The Morning Brief, a current affairs programme on Channels Television on Friday, Kalgo alleged that INEC was demonstrating political bias and working to suppress emerging parties that pose a threat to the APC’s continued hold on power.

“I think INEC is being biased and also afraid because the coalition is here to defeat APC come 2027,” Kalgo said. “It seems INEC is working hand in hand with the APC government.”

He claimed that INEC has refused to approve more than 70 pending applications from groups seeking to register as political parties, without offering any formal explanation for the rejections.

“These are political parties or groups trying to form a party and give Nigerians a fresh platform and a real choice,” Kalgo said. “Are we to believe that all 70 applications were incomplete or failed to meet the requirements?”

He cited provisions in the Electoral Act, which he said obligated the Commission to respond to party registration applications within 90 days. Kalgo maintained that, in the absence of a timely response, the applications should be deemed successful.

According to him, the Commission’s silence and wholesale dismissal of applications suggest a coordinated effort to limit political competition and maintain the status quo.

“What we are witnessing is a deliberate attempt to weaken the opposition and deny Nigerians the opportunity to opt for a new political direction,” Kalgo stated.

He emphasised that the coalition remains committed to pursuing all legal and constitutional avenues to ensure its registration is acknowledged, adding that the group will not be deterred by intimidation or interference from the ruling party or government-aligned institutions.    

“We are determined to ensure Nigerians have access to alternative voices and credible options at the ballot box,” Kalgo concluded.
