The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has expressed deep concern over the renewed moves to impeach Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing the action as a direct assault on the authority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
MOSOP warned that the decision by the lawmakers to remove the governor could plunge the state into further instability and derail the significant progress achieved in resolving Ogoni issues through the Office of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
Reacting to the impeachment notice served on the governor last Thursday, the President of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, stated that the sudden attempt to oust Fubara questions the Assembly’s loyalty to President Tinubu, who has personally intervened to resolve the political crisis in the state.
Nsuke argued that proceeding with impeachment over matters already addressed by Presidential intervention is a slight on Mr. President and could have far-reaching negative implications for peace in the region.
“The impeachment move against the governor is embarrassing and hurts the global image of the country,” Nsuke said.
“The issues of misunderstanding between the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the state governor were presumed to have been addressed and resolved by the intervention of Mr. President.”
He expressed fear that anti-development elements could exploit the resulting social crisis to roll back gains made in the Ogoni oil-related resolution.
“At this time, we need to build an investor-friendly environment, and signs of unending political conflicts are not good for our economy. I think Mr. President should be respected; when he intervenes and resolves a matter, that matter should be deemed resolved and not be seen lingering thereafter,” Nsuke added.
MOSOP, therefore, called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to immediately discontinue the impeachment proceedings to protect the nation’s image and respect the integrity of President.
