How many times can you defect in a month? — Akpabio mocks defecting Senators

Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio turned Tuesday’s plenary into a session of political satire, mocking lawmakers for what he described as a daily ritual of defecting from one party to another.

The mocking remarks came as a wave of defections swept through the National Assembly, leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a state of apparent ruin.

As the floor became a revolving door of defection letters, a visibly amused Akpabio suggested that the defecting legislators should stop making individual announcements to save the Senate’s time.

“Maybe all those defecting from ADC should just compile everything in one paper and bring it, so that we don’t keep announcing, announcing, announcing,” Akpabio quipped, drawing laughter from the chamber.

He went further to question the frequency of these political maneuvers, asking, “How many times can you defect in a month? Once. But some have done three times.”

The Senate President did not mince words regarding the fate of the African Democratic Congress, which has seen its ranks decimated by exits to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Labour Party (LP).

“Because I think ADC is dead,” Akpabio declared bluntly.

He cited Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe as a example of the political defections currently playing out in the red chamber saying, “note that Senator Abaribe has moved from APGA to ADC, and now he has moved from ADC to Labour Party.”
