Hit-and-run driver kills police officer in Gombe, investigation underway

A police officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Yunana, has been killed in a hit-and-run incident in Gombe State, sparking a manhunt for the unidentified driver responsible.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi. According to the statement, ASP Yunana, who was attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga Division, died on Wednesday, July 17, 2025.

The fatal accident occurred around 5 p.m. near the Matrix Filling Station in the Tumfure area of Akko Local Government Area.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the officer was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by an unidentified vehicle travelling from the Bauchi axis toward Gombe metropolis.

“The driver failed to stop or render assistance, fleeing the scene and leaving the officer critically injured,” the police spokesperson said. “He was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was later confirmed dead.”

DSP Abdullahi added that a full investigation is underway and that the Command is intensifying efforts to trace the vehicle and driver involved in the incident.

The police have also appealed to members of the public to provide any relevant information that could help identify the suspect.

Meanwhile, Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, has extended condolences on behalf of the Command to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer.
