The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris (FNIPR), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr Dan Agbese, describing him as “a titan of truth” and a foundational figure in Nigeria’s contemporary journalism.

In a statement, Idris said Agbese’s legacy shaped the nation’s public discourse through his co-founding of the trailblazing Newswatch magazine, which became a defining institution in Nigeria’s media landscape.

The minister said the late journalist championed “the values of courage, intellectual integrity, and an unwavering commitment to press freedom, the very cornerstones of a vibrant democracy.” He noted that Agbese’s incisive No Holds Barred column and lifelong dedication held power to account and contributed to nation-building.

Idris added that Agbese’s passing comes at a time when the Tinubu administration is committed to fostering the very principles he fought for – including expanded democratic space, robust citizen engagement, and free speech.

The minister extended his heartfelt condolences to Agbese’s family, colleagues, and the wider media fraternity, adding: “Dan Agbese was a giant, and his profound contributions will continue to illuminate the path forward for Nigeria. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
