The Organising Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, has died after sustaining gunshot injuries in an attack by unidentified gunmen along the Ikorodu Road axis of Lagos.

Ajiboye was reportedly attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in the Fadeyi area of the state.

According to reports, the gunmen intercepted the vehicle conveying the union official and opened fire on the occupants.

Although Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle initially survived the attack with varying degrees of gunshot injuries, he was later confirmed dead after succumbing to his injuries.

The Chairman of the NURTW Lagos State Council, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Describing the late union official as a loyal and dependable ally, Adekunle said Ajiboye made significant contributions to the activities of the union and remained committed to its ideals.

He said the deceased was more than a colleague, noting that his dedication, loyalty and years of service to the union would be remembered by members of the organisation.

Adekunle also extended condolences to Ajiboye’s family, friends and members of the NURTW, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for those affected by the loss.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, while there has been no official statement from the police on the circumstances surrounding the killing as of the time of filing this report.
