Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi as the new Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), calling it a significant step towards strengthening the nation’s security framework.
The governor’s commendation followed a series of successful operations carried out by the DSS Kaduna Command, which resulted in the arrest of 54 individuals and the recovery of a substantial amount of arms and ammunition.
Speaking through the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Sule Shuaibu (SAN), during a press briefing at the DSS headquarters in Kaduna, Governor Sani acknowledged that the agency, under Ajayi’s leadership, had significantly ramped up efforts to tackle criminal activities within the state.
Shuaibu revealed that the arrested suspects included eight alleged bandits, 22 suspected informants, four gunrunners, two human traffickers, four cyber fraudsters, two vandals, and 12 individuals connected to suspected bandits. He also confirmed the recovery of five AK-47 rifles, one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), three Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launchers, and more than 5,000 rounds of assorted ammunition. In addition, 79 kidnapping victims were rescued and are now in the care of the state government.
Among those arrested was a security operative from Zamfara State, who admitted to stealing and selling ammunition intended for anti-banditry operations. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of 217 rounds of live ammunition, which he had intended to sell for N4 million.
Another suspect, a gunrunner, was detained with 500 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, which he planned to deliver to a buyer in the troubled Birnin Gwari area for N1.5 million. In a separate interception, a suspect was apprehended while attempting to transport 1,087 rounds of ammunition to Katsina State, while another was arrested in Funtua, Katsina, with 701 rounds meant for delivery to Zamfara.
Additionally, in a distinct operation in Asaba, Delta State, DSS operatives seized more than 50 AK-47 rifles, six pump-action guns, and 3,000 rounds of ammunition. A Nigerian national serving in the British Army was also arrested in connection with the arms cache.
Governor Sani reiterated his administration’s ongoing commitment to supporting security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property in Kaduna State.
