Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, on Tuesday presented compensation cheques worth N1.45 billion to 195 residents of Ijan, Awo, and Araromi Ekiti, whose lands were acquired for the Ekiti Knowledge Zone (EKZ) initiative.

The brief ceremony, held at the Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti, marked a key milestone in the state’s plan to build a knowledge-based economy. Governor Oyebanji said the EKZ is expected to generate over 14,000 jobs, particularly for the youth, describing the project as central to tackling unemployment and shaping a sustainable future for younger generations.

Calling the Knowledge Zone a “catalyst for development,” the Governor said, “As a state celebrated for its intellectual capital, we have chosen to leverage this unique strength to drive inclusive economic growth and establish a vibrant hub for innovation and service-driven industries.”

He explained that the EKZ is supported by vital infrastructure already underway, including the Ekiti State Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport and the Ekiti Ring Road Project, which will help enhance the project’s viability.

To ensure fairness in compensating affected communities, Oyebanji said the government appointed Green Engagement Limited as an independent consultant to oversee implementation of the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP).

Acknowledging support from the Federal Government and the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Governor clarified that although the Federal Government guaranteed an $80 million loan on behalf of Ekiti State, the funds were not handed to the state government.

He said, “The African Development Bank, in collaboration with the Ekiti State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (EKDIPA), manages the procurement process and pays contractors directly. The state government neither receives nor disburses the loan funds.”

He added that the original compensation figure of N1.11 billion was reviewed upward in response to economic realities, now totalling N1.45 billion, fully disbursed to beneficiaries at the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Lolade Olutola, Director General of EKDIPA and EKZ Project Coordinator, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to building Ekiti’s future on foundations of knowledge, creativity, and resilience. She commended the fairness and inclusiveness of the compensation process.

The Onijan of Ijan Ekiti, Oba Aladesuyi Adebanji, commended Governor Oyebanji for delivering on his promises and placing citizens’ welfare at the forefront. He described the EKZ as a landmark initiative addressing both technical and developmental challenges in the state.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Bankole Ojo, speaking on behalf of the recipients, expressed gratitude to the Governor and pledged continued community support for the success of the EKZ.

The Ekiti Knowledge Zone is a flagship initiative aimed at fostering a tech-based ecosystem and nurturing knowledge-driven enterprises through innovation, research, and enterprise incubation.
