Telecommunications subscribers across Nigeria are experiencing significant service disruptions following multiple fibre optic cable cuts affecting MTN Nigeria’s network infrastructure.
The outages, which were seen on the NCC major outages portal, have impacted several key states, including Delta, Niger, Kano, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Reports indicate that the damage to the fibre infrastructure has crippled essential services in major urban centers. In the North, the disruptions are heavily felt in the Kano Municipal area and Bida, Niger State.
Within the Federal Capital Territory, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) remains one of the hardest-hit zones, leaving businesses and residents struggling with intermittent connectivity.
Data from the NCC’s monitoring platform reveals that while voice and data services for MTN are showing signs of operational recovery in some regions, USSD services continue to face a major outage.
Experts note that fibre cuts are often the result of ongoing road construction, vandalism, or administrative mishaps during infrastructure projects.
MTN Nigeria has previously advocated for the protection of telecommunications assets, urging the government to treat such infrastructure as critical national infrastructure to deter vandalism and ensure faster restoration times.
As of Monday evening, technical teams are reportedly on-site in the affected corridors to repair the severed cables.
