The Federal Government has reactivated the Greater Dutse Water Supply Project, valued at N59.4 billion, in a bid to tackle the longstanding water shortage that has plagued the state capital and surrounding communities for over two decades.

The project, which was abandoned under previous administrations, is set to provide 10 million liters of potable water daily.

The project, located in Sultilmawa, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was flagged off by the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utseve, on Thursday.

He highlighted that the initiative was a key part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at improving living conditions for Nigerians by ensuring access to clean water.

“The project will provide potable and clean water to the residents of Dutse and its neighbouring communities, thus improving the value chain,” Prof. Utseve said during the ceremony.

The project will feature a 10,000-meter concrete reservoir and housing quarters, with a scheduled completion within 24 months.

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa expressed his gratitude to the Tinubu administration for fulfilling its promise to revive the project, which he said would alleviate the persistent water shortage in Dutse.

“We believe this project will put an end to the prolonged water scarcity in the state capital and its environs,” Governor Namadi stated.

The Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Hameem Sanusi, also shared his emotional connection to the project, recalling how his late father advocated for its completion throughout various administrations.

“I remember how my father always reminded every President that visited Dutse about the need to assist and complete this project. Today is a significant milestone for our people,” the Emir reflected.

Residents of Dutse welcomed the development, expressing hope that it would bring much-needed relief. Umar Abubakar, a resident, described the project as a long-awaited blessing, while Kamilu Bakari, another local, noted the potential benefits for both the community and farmers in the region.

“This project will be a great benefit to both residents and farmers in Dutse and the surrounding communities,” Bakari said.
