FG moves to restore peace in Plateau after fresh attack

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that the security situation in Plateau State remains under control following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North.
Speaking at Radio House, Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris stated that the Federal Government extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Plateau State, emphasising that security agencies responded immediately to the incident.
"Troops under Operation Enduring Peace were rapidly mobilised to the scene following distress calls. The military and other security agencies cordoned off the affected area, secured key access routes, and launched targeted search-and-clearance operations to track down the perpetrators," he said.
"These swift actions ensured that the situation was quickly contained and prevented further escalation."
He highlighted that the response is part of a broader and sustained Federal Government security architecture in Plateau State and the wider North-Central region. Clearance operations, intelligence-led missions, reinforced surveillance, joint military-police patrols, and rapid response mechanisms have all been implemented to proactively neutralise threats and maintain stability.
At the national level, Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently held a high-level meeting with top security and intelligence officials to review the Plateau situation and plan further decisive action. Following the meeting, Plateau State Gov. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang was invited to deliberate with federal authorities on a coordinated path toward lasting peace.
The outcome of this engagement will be made public in due course, reflecting the seriousness with which the Federal Government is treating the matter.
The Plateau State Government has also taken immediate complementary measures. A 48-hour curfew was imposed in Jos North to stabilise the environment, prevent reprisals, and facilitate ongoing security operations. Authorities continue to collaborate closely to ensure calm is restored and investigations proceed efficiently.
While the attack is deeply regrettable, Idris stressed that it does not indicate a breakdown of national security. "Plateau State has over time experienced localised security challenges linked to communal tensions and criminal activities. What occurred is a criminal act within a known conflict-prone area, one that is being actively and decisively addressed by the authorities," he said.
Idris further assured that all those responsible for the attack will be brought to justice, noting that ongoing operations are already generating actionable intelligence. "There will be no safe haven for criminal elements anywhere in Nigeria," he emphasised.
Idris urged citizens to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security agencies, while avoiding the spread of unverified information that could escalate tensions. He reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening intelligence capabilities, and ensuring lasting peace in Plateau State.
"Nigeria will not yield to fear. We will protect our people, and we will prevail," he concluded.
