FG boosts seed certification reforms to advance food security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has stepped up efforts to strengthen the nation’s food security through reforms in seed certification, officials said following a high-level meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, visited the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kiyari, to discuss strategies aimed at expanding access to certified seeds and establishing a decentralised seed certification system with stringent quality controls.

The press statement, signed by Mohammed Manga, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Finance.

It reads partly: “Talks focused on expanding access to certified seeds, establishing a decentralised seed certification system with strict quality controls, and finalising preparations for the upcoming dry season farming.

“Strengthening agricultural productivity is central to reducing food inflation, attracting private investment, and securing long-term economic growth for Nigeria.”

Officials emphasised that improving the quality and availability of certified seeds would boost agricultural productivity, support smallholder farmers, and contribute to stabilising food prices across the country.

The meeting also set the stage for closer inter-ministerial collaboration to ensure that upcoming dry season farming is optimally prepared, and that reforms in seed certification are effectively implemented nationwide.
