FG appoints new board for Galaxy Backbone, signalling stronger digital future
By Blessing Emmanuel
The Federal Government has given Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) a significant boost with the inauguration of a newly reconstituted Board of Directors, marking a pivotal step in expanding digital services for Nigerians.
This move goes beyond just policy announcements; it represents tangible action to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure. With the fresh board now in place, citizens can expect improvements in internet connectivity, e-government services, and digital solutions for both public and private sectors.
At the event in Abuja, Senator Dr. George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, urged the new board to steer GBB towards becoming a more agile, people-centred organisation.
“We must collaborate to create something Nigerians can take pride in. Galaxy Backbone must lead our digital transformation,” Akume stated.
For more than a year, GBB operated without a formal board, but this did not halt its progress. CEO Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju revealed that the company had successfully developed a comprehensive digital roadmap called the Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy (IDTS) for 2025–2028.
The strategy aims to modernise Nigeria’s ICT infrastructure, incorporating advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence, while also enhancing cybersecurity measures.
With the new board now in place, GBB is poised to implement these ambitious plans. Prof. Adeyanju expressed his confidence that the board’s leadership will enable the company to move forward and realise these initiatives.
“Nigeria’s digital future just became brighter,” he said.
As part of the inauguration, the new board visited GBB’s cutting-edge National Shared Services Centre, including its Data Centre and Security Operations Centre. Senator Akume commended the facilities and reiterated the government’s commitment to using these resources to improve national service delivery.
The restructured board features experts from diverse fields, ensuring broad representation and a range of perspectives. Its members include individuals from federal ministries, key government agencies, and the private sector.
