Eyo festival: Our cultural assets are goldmines for tourism, destination promotion — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described Nigeria’s cultural heritage as a potent tool for economic growth and destination promotion, urging the nation to leverage its rich traditions to tap into the global tourism market.

The President made this known on Saturday at the Grand Finale of the 2025 Eyo Festival held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos.

In a historic move, President Tinubu participated in the carnival dressed in the full traditional Eyo regalia a flowing white robe, a damask sash, a distinctive hat adorned with decorative stars, and clutching the iconic 'Opambata' staff. His appearance marked the first time a sitting President has participated in the festival in such a capacity.

Speaking on the significance of the festival, which returned after an eight-year hiatus, President Tinubu termed the event a great rekindling of our culture.

He emphasized that festivals like the Eyo are not merely pageantry but vital economic drivers, especially coming at a time when the country witnesses an influx of visitors during the festive season often referred to as Detty December.

“It is a reminder that our culture and traditions hold great tourism potential,” the President stated. “Indeed, our cultural assets can serve as valuable resources for destination promotion. The glamour of white-robed figures parading our streets in celebration of distinguished Lagosians sends a resounding message about our identity and our country.”

The 2025 edition of the festival was unique in its scope, honouring four late icons of Lagos State simultaneously; the first military administrator, Mobolaji Johnson; the first civilian governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande; former civilian governor, Sir Michael Otedola; and the President’s mother, former Iyaloja General, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji.

President Tinubu eulogized the honorees as leaders and builders whose diligence in public service was instrumental in positioning Lagos State on the global map.

“The Eyo Festival is a vibrant expression of the rich traditions of Lagos. It celebrates the achievements, outstanding contributions, and exemplary lives of distinguished Nigerians not only eminent Lagosians,” Tinubu added.

Earlier in his welcome address, the host, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the President’s presence as a homecoming and a historic moment for the state.

“Mr. President, it is not just a coincidence; it is history in your lifetime that is being put in place today. We are seated with the President and Commander-in-Chief to witness the history of the cultural heritage of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that his administration remains committed to maximizing the festival's potential to project Lagos globally.

The colorful event attracted top dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma (Imo); Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka; and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
