Expert calls for shift in conventional engineering methods

Engr. Dr. Bola Mudasiru, a leading figure in highway engineering and Deputy National Chairman of the Nigeria Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE), has shift in conventional engineering methods in Nigeria’s road sector.

Speaking at the 2026 FERMA Road Summit in Abuja, Dr. Mudasiru argued that sustainability must transition from a buzzword to the cornerstone of national infrastructure development.

Addressing the summit, Dr. Mudasiru emphasized that building a sustainable road network transcends mere annual budget allocations.

He advocated for a fundamental shift away from conventional design and construction toward climate-resilient approaches.

"We must adopt low-carbon materials, leverage innovative financing, and embrace technology to deliver eco-friendly road networks," he stated.

Dr. Mudasiru pointed out that global development partners, including the World Bank and the African Development Bank, are increasingly prioritizing projects with a green focus.

A key highlight of his address was the call for the Nigerian government to enact the Roads Reform Bill. Dr. Mudasiru described the legislation as a critical catalyst for unlocking new funding streams and strengthening institutional frameworks.

"The bill offers numerous benefits, including easier access to international support and private financing," he noted.

Echoing these sentiments, the immediate past National Chairman of NIHTE, Engr. Hassan Saidu, stressed that the summit was a timely response to the nation's chronic maintenance deficit.

Saidu argued that road maintenance is not an afterthought but a process that must begin the moment a road is opened to traffic.
