Eshilokun calls for greater investment in training of seafarers

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshilokun, has called for increased investment in maritime education, training and professional development to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian seafarers in the global labour market.

Eshilokun made the call while delivering a goodwill message at the 2026 Day of the Seafarer celebration in Lagos.

Speaking, the Senator said the future growth of Nigeria’s maritime industry depends largely on the quality of training and capacity-building opportunities available to seafarers and other maritime professionals.

According to him, institutions responsible for maritime education and training must receive greater support to equip Nigerian seafarers with the knowledge, certifications and skills required to compete internationally.

He noted that as global shipping continues to evolve, continuous professional development has become essential for maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency and productivity within the maritime sector.

Eshilokun also highlighted the importance of improving welfare conditions for seafarers, stressing that they remain among the most critical contributors to global trade.

The lawmaker observed that seafarers routinely face significant challenges, including security concerns, occupational risks, adverse weather conditions and lengthy periods of separation from their families.

He described this year’s Day of the Seafarer theme, “Carrying World Trade, Carrying the Risk,” as a fitting reflection of the realities faced by maritime workers across the world.

The Senator further reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting maritime development through legislation and policies that promote safety, security and sustainable growth.

He said efforts are ongoing to support the Federal Government’s agenda on port modernisation, indigenous shipping development and the expansion of the blue economy.

Eshilokun urged maritime operators, government agencies, shipping companies and labour organisations to work together in ensuring fair treatment, adequate welfare support and improved career opportunities for seafarers.

He concluded by paying tribute to seafarers for their dedication and sacrifice, noting that their contributions continue to connect nations and sustain global commerce.
