Emirates bars use of power banks on all flights

Emirates Airlines has announced that passengers will no longer be allowed to use power banks aboard its flights, effective Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following a safety review that flagged rising risks linked to lithium battery incidents in aviation.

The UAE flag carrier said the ban applies across its entire fleet and forms part of enhanced safety measures to protect passengers and crew.

“Using any kind of power bank is prohibited onboard Emirates flights, effective from tomorrow,” the airline said in a statement on Tuesday. “Emirates provides in-seat charging on all aircraft; however, customers are advised to fully charge their devices before flying, especially on longer routes.”

The airline noted that the increased reliance on portable chargers has paralleled a surge in lithium battery-related incidents across the aviation sector. Industry regulators have repeatedly warned that overheating or faulty lithium-ion batteries pose fire risks in pressurised cabins.

While Emirates stressed that alternative charging options remain available through in-seat USB ports and power outlets, it urged passengers to take precautions and ensure their electronic devices are adequately charged before boarding.

The new restriction follows similar global safety actions by several carriers and regulators seeking to minimise the dangers associated with personal electronic devices during air travel.
