The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, has called for stronger coordination among stakeholders in Nigeria’s electricity sector, stressing that decentralization should create more investment opportunities rather than lead to fragmented infrastructure and poorly coordinated development.

Speaking at the Africa Energy Leadership Summit 2026 in Lagos, Mohammed said NISO was strengthening its role in coordinating system operations, infrastructure planning, and electricity market activities as more states establish their own electricity markets.

He highlighted Integrated Resource Planning and a proposed centralized NESI data infrastructure as key initiatives to improve coordination, transparency, and investor confidence.

The NISO MD also urged state governments, regulators, investors, and development partners to work together to maximize the opportunities provided by the Electricity Act 2023, emphasizing that a decentralized electricity sector must remain coordinated in planning and operations to deliver improved electricity access, reliability, affordability, and sustainable investment.
