As Nigeria prepares for Eid-el-Kabir, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ogun State has raised the alarm over rising threats of road crashes due to overspeeding, overloading, and drunk driving, urging motorists to prioritise safety over haste.
On June 4, 2025, Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Adewunmi Fasakin, addressed drivers and passengers at Kuto Motor Park, Abeokuta, during a public sensitisation campaign.
With travel expected to surge during the Sallah celebrations, the campaign targets drivers’ risky habits to prevent avoidable fatalities.
Fasakin wasted no words in describing the deadly consequences of poor judgment on the road.
“Speed is a silent killer. We are here to sensitise the motoring public, especially the drivers and the passengers, during this Eid-el-Kabir festival,”he warned.
He said the FRSC has ramped up its public enlightenment campaigns to coincide with the anticipated surge in travel during the holiday period.
He noted, “We know that people will be traveling and there will be an increase in vehicular activities. We are here to let them know that speed is dangerous and they should not overload their vehicles just as drinking and driving is dangerous.”
The FRSC also warned against transporting dangerous materials such as gas cylinders and petrol in passenger vehicles, a common but overlooked practice in many Nigerian cities.
Fasakin called on passengers to abandon passivity and take ownership of their safety.
Kuto Garage Chairman, Mr Idowu Afolabi, acknowledged the impact of the regular FRSC visits, noting their consistency and educational value.
“Ogun Road Safety have been doing this for us from time to time. They come around every three weeks to remind and educate us,” Afolabi said.
