The Acting Zonal Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE 1) Michael Wetkas, has called for greater collaboration between the Commission and the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) to strengthen efforts in tackling economic and financial crimes, as well as other forms of corruption.

He made this appeal while receiving the Comptroller of Corrections for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Olatubosun Ajibogun, who recently paid a courtesy visit to the EFCC’s Abuja Directorate.

Wetkas emphasised that no single agency can effectively carry out law enforcement duties in isolation.

“Collaboration—both at the local and international levels—is the way forward. Without it, we cannot make any real progress. You have demonstrated this understanding by reaching out to us, extending a hand of partnership, and initiating discussions that will not only improve our respective services but also benefit the nation as a whole,” he stated.

Ajibogun provided insights into recent developments within the Correctional Service, noting that its current focus is on skill acquisition, rehabilitation, and reformation.

He commended the ongoing cooperation between the two agencies and urged the EFCC’s legal team to explore non-custodial sentencing options, ensuring that convicts are assigned to appropriate correctional facilities.

“The placement of some convicts in custodial centres is not always aligned with the terms of their sentencing,” he explained, adding that reforms in sentencing procedures would help improve the effectiveness of the correctional system.
