The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the suspension of its 2023 senatorial candidate for Edo South, Mr Valentine Asuen, over allegations of anti-party activities.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued in Benin on Monday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie.

According to the statement, Asuen’s suspension was carried out in line with the APC Constitution 2022 (as amended) after he was found guilty of actions described as capable of creating discord within the party.

“This disciplinary action became necessary following conduct that runs contrary to the spirit of unity, loyalty, and collective progress enshrined in our constitution.

“These actions have been deemed to amount to inciting division within the party, thereby undermining the cohesion and discipline expected of every member.

“No act capable of destabilising the party or fuelling disaffection amongst members will be condoned.

“The APC remains committed to internal democracy, discipline, and safeguarding its integrity. We call on all members to stay resolute, united, and focused on delivering good governance and democratic dividends to the people,” the statement read in part.

Uwadiae-Igbinigie clarified that the suspension was in accordance with Articles 21:2 (ii) and (v), and 21:5 (a), (c), (d), (e), (f), and (h) of the party’s constitution, which stipulate suspension or expulsion as penalties for such offences.

He dismissed claims of favouritism in recent political appointments, asserting that Governor Godwin Obaseki’s appointments were fairly distributed across the state and not influenced by the party’s secretary, Mr Lawrence Okah.

The Edo APC leadership reiterated its position that indiscipline and disloyalty would not be tolerated, calling on party members to remain committed and focused on advancing the party’s agenda.

Asuen, a businessman and politician, had contested the 2023 Edo South senatorial election on the APC platform but was defeated by Mr Neda Imasuen of the Labour Party, who has since defected to the APC.
